Dear NW TURN Colleagues,

Mindful of the concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19) we made the hard decision to cancel our March 20-21, 2020 Northwest Turn Conference. In making this decision we acknowledged the recommendations of the King County Health Department’s and our hosting organization, the Washington Education Association to “cancel all non-essential meetings”. CEC will be returning any checks we have received for the NW TURN conference registration fees.

We invite you to complete the short survey by clicking on this survey link to determine if we might create some virtual conferencing opportunities that would provide E-Learning options to address the topics we had planned to examine at our NW TURN Conference, such as: collaboration, equity issues in schools and social emotional learning. Further we need your thoughts on the best time for our conference next fall.

While postponing our conference is disappointing for all of us, we would like to encourage you to consider attending the California LMI Summer Institute on June 23-24 and Pre-Conference on June 22, 2020, at the Double Tree by Hilton San Diego Mission Valley in San Diego, CA. The Summer Institute is an opportunity to convene with your labor-management team to learn from other districts, share insights, reflect on the past work and plan your work for the coming year. The conference will feature concurrent workshop sessions and presentations by labor management teams that have made significant strides by making collaborative partnerships a priority over the past few years. Stay tuned for registration information coming soon!

Thank you and stay healthy!

Dear NW TURN Colleagues,

Our next Northwest TURN event, Empowering Educators: Focusing on Collaborative Approaches to Success is scheduled for March 20-21, 2020 at the Washington Education Association, 32032 Weyerhaeuser Way S, Federal Way, WA 98001. We will continue to explore collaborative ways to reach all students, set high standards and support educators. How can PLC’s make a difference for teachers and students? What do we know about SEL to provide supportive classrooms for students and manage educator stress? Why do collaborative practices produce better results for students? We will also explore new approaches in developing conditions for effective teaching and learning. Our agenda will feature local, state and national examples of promising practices and policies that focus on this joint work.

Our NW TURN teams represent union & teacher leaders, school & district administrators, and board members who are working jointly to develop collaborative approaches to teaching and learning to improve teaching and learning. We continue to encourage and support our NW TURN teams to jointly develop, implement and share their efforts. Additionally, we will work with teams to develop action plans in order to facilitate the work in our school communities.

Our NW TURN locals are encouraged to invite representatives from their district and school administration, boards of education and community leaders to join their teams for this two-day forum.
